Adaptation does not have to start with a full remake
WEBTOON converts selected English-language Originals into Video Episodes by retaining the source scripts and core artwork, then adding motion, sound, music and human voice acting. It is neither a conventional animated season nor a static trailer, but an intermediate product that gives existing IP a watchable version.
Vertical-drama destinations are accepting animation
Fuji Television formally added short animation to FOD SHORT, allowing animation and live-action vertical drama to share one mobile destination. For catalog strategy, the boundary begins to shift from animation versus live action toward which stories work in serialized, short-session, vertical viewing.
Build the rights and asset matrix first
Before production, teams should identify who licenses original panels, character designs, dialogue, music, voices and overseas-language versions, while marking which shots can be animated directly and which need reconstruction. The cost advantage of short animation exists only when rights are clear and source assets are reusable.
Short animation can be a validation layer before full adaptation—provided creators are involved and the rights chain is clear.
